RSPO certification is an assurance to the customer that the standard of palm oil production is sustainable. RSPO was formed in 2004 with the objective of promoting the growth and usage of sustainable palm oil products through credible international standards. RSPO are a not-for-profit that unites stakeholders from the 7 sectors of the palm oil industry: oil palm producers, processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks/investors, and environmental and social non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.

The 7 Principles of the RSPO Standards.

The RSPO Standards contains seven (7) principles. The RSPO P&C cover the most significant environmental and social impacts of palm oil production and the immediate inputs to production, such as seed, chemicals and water, and social impacts related to on-farm labour and community relations.

The general requirements are as follow:

  • Principle 1 Behave ethically and transparently
  • Principle 2 Operate legally and respect rights
  • Principle 3 Optimise productivity, efficiency, positive impacts and resilience
  • Principle 4 Respect community and human rights and deliver benefits
  • Principle 5 Support smallholder inclusion
  • Principle 6 Respect workers’ rights and conditions
  • Principle 7 Protect, conserve and enhance ecosystems and the environment

Each of the seven (7) General Principles have specific criteria and indicators that the Certification Bodies (CBs) will use during audit to determine compliance. The management of the entity that meets the requirements of the RSPO will be able to obtain certification under the standard.
